Expansion Draft: Metropolitan Division

The final blog before I get to unveil my mock Vegas Golden Knights roster. And I saved the toughest one for last as one team within the division (as of writing this) isn’t compliant with player exposure requirements, one team needs a player to waive their No Movement Clause and one team has a very tough goalie situation to deal with.

My mock Central Division protection lists can be seen here: https://avalancheavenue.wordpress.com/2017/05/08/expansion-draft-central-division/

Mock Pacific Division protection lists can be found here: https://avalancheavenue.wordpress.com/2017/05/11/expansion-draft-pacific-division/

And mock Atlantic Division protection lists you can find here: https://avalancheavenue.wordpress.com/2017/05/14/expansion-draft-atlantic-division/

Just a reminder, Expansion Draft rules can be seen on the Central Division blog (see above for link).

So let’s dive into the Metropolitan Division. Who will each team protect and who will they expose? Are they even compliant (Rangers, I’m looking in your direction)?

NMC = No Movement Clause

Carolina Hurricanes

Option: 7 forwards, 3 d-men, 1 goalie

  • Forwards: Jordan Staal (NMC), Jeff Skinner, Victor Rask, Elias Lindholm, Teuvo Teräväinen, Andrej Nestrasil, Philip Di Giuseppe.
  • Defensemen: Justin Faulk, Ryan Murphy, Trevor Carrick.
  • Goaltender: Scott Darling.

Exposure Requirements:

  • Forward Exposure Requirements: 2/2. Lee Stempniak, Joakim Nordstrom.
  • D-man Exposure Requirement: 1/1. Klas Dahlbeck.
  • Goalie Exposure Requirement: 3/1. Eddie Lack, Cam Ward, Daniel Altshuller.
  • Other Notable Exposed Exposed: Jay McClement.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Option: 7 forwards, 3 d-men, 1 goalie

  • Forwards: Nick Foligno (NMC), Brandon Dubinsky (NMC), Scott Hartnell^ (NMC), Brandon Saad, Cam Atkinson, Boone Jenner, Alexander Wennberg.
  • Defensemen: Seth Jones, Ryan Murray, David Savard.
  • Goaltender: Sergei Bobrovsky (NMC).

Exposure Requirements:

  • Forward Exposure Requirements: 3/2. Matt Calvert, William Karlsson, Lukas Sedlak.
  • D-man Exposure Requirement: 1/1. Jack Johnson.
  • Goalie Exposure Requirement: 3/1. Oscar Dansk, Anton Forsberg, Joonas Korpisalo.
  • Other Notable Exposed Exposed: Josh Anderson, Sam Gagner.

^ Scott Hartnell has a No Movement Clause and the Columbus Blue Jackets will have to hope Hartnell will oblige them and waive it so the Blue Jackets can protect someone else. Good news is that Hartnell likely will. Bad news is that the Blue Jackets will lose one of Josh Anderson, Matt Calvert or William Karlsson. All of those players were key cogs that attributed to the Blue Jacket‘s success this season.

Whether Hartnell waives his NMC or is bought out of his contract, the Columbus Blue Jackets will still fulfill their exposure requirement of two forwards that played either 40 games this season or 70 games in the prior two seasons so there’s no big worry there. Their big worry is who to protect out of Anderson, Karlsson and Calvert. It’s really between Anderson and Karlsson as Calvert produced less points than those two and is 3-4 years older as well. In any scenario, the Blue Jackets are going to be losing a really good young player to Vegas.

New Jersey Devils

Option: 8 skaters, 1 goalie

  • Forwards: Taylor Hall, Kyle Palmieri, Adam Henrique, Travis Zajac.
  • Defensemen: Damon Severson, John Moore, Jon Merrill, Andy Greene.
  • Goaltender: Cory Schneider.

Exposure Requirements:

  • Forward Exposure Requirements: 2/2. Mike Cammalleri, Devante Smith-Pelly.
  • D-man Exposure Requirement: 2/1. Ben Lovejoy, Dalton Prout.
  • Goalie Exposure Requirement: 1/1. Scott Wedgewood.
  • Other Notable Exposed Exposed: Beau Bennett, Jacob Josefson.

New York Islanders

Option: 7 forwards, 3 d-men, 1 goalie

  • Forwards: John Tavares (NMC), Andrew Ladd (NMC), Anders Lee, Josh Bailey, Brock Nelson, Ryan Strome, Casey Cizikas.
  • Defensemen: Johnny Boychuck (NMC), Nick Leddy, Calvin De Haan.
  • Goaltender: Thomas Greiss.

Exposure Requirements:

  • Forward Exposure Requirements: 5/2. Nikolai Kulemin, Cal Clutterbuck, Jason Chimera, Shane Prince, Alan Quine.
  • D-man Exposure Requirement: 3/1. Travis Hamonic, Thomas Hickey, Dennis Seidenberg.
  • Goalie Exposure Requirement: 2/1. Jaroslav Halak, Chris Gibson.
  • Other Notable Exposed Exposed: Ryan Pulock, Adam Pelech.

New York Rangers

Option: 7 forwards, 3 d-men, 1 goalie

  • Forwards: Rick Nash (NMC), Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider, Mats Zuccarello, J.T. Miller, Kevin Hayes, Michael Grabner.
  • Defensemen: Marc Staal (NMC), Dan Girardi (NMC), Ryan McDonagh.
  • Goaltender: Henrik Lundqvist (NMC).

Exposure Requirements:

  • Forward Exposure Requirements: 0/2. NOT COMPLIANT^
  • D-man Exposure Requirement: 2/1. Nick Holden, Kevin Klein.
  • Goalie Exposure Requirement: 2/1. Antti Raanta, Mackenzie Skapski.
  • Other Notable Exposed Exposed: Mika Zibanejad, Jesper Fast, Oscar Lindberg.

^ The only team in all of my mock protection lists that isn’t compliant with exposure requirements. The Rangers have zero unprotected forwards that fulfill the requirements of being under contract for next season AND playing 40 games this season or 70 games the prior two seasons.

Your first question is probably, is your protected forwards list even accurate? Well, the 7 forwards I protected for the Rangers were their 7 best forwards in terms of producing points this season. So yes it’s very likely this is the Ranger‘s list too.

The Rangers could ask Rick Nash to waive his NMC and protect Zibanejad instead. Zibanejad was 10th on the team in points this season and lead the team in points in the playoffs. The Rangers don’t want to lose him. However, it’s unlikely Nash would waive his NMC. But even if Nash did waive his NMC and the Rangers did protect Zibanejad instead, the Rangers would still not be compliant as they still would need another forward who is under contract for next season AND has played in either 40 games this season or 70 games the previous two seasons.

So how do they get compliant? Sign two of any of the following forwards for next season: Tanner Glass, Brandon Pirri, Matt Puempel, Jesper Fast, Oscar Lindberg, or Mika Zibanejad.

Philadelphia Flyers

Option: 7 forwards, 3 d-men, 1 goalie

  • Forwards: Claude Giroux (NMC), Valterri Filppula (NMC), Wayne Simmonds, Jakub Voracek, Brayden Schenn, Sean Couturier, Nick Cousins.
  • Defensemen: Shayne Gostisbehere, Radko Gudas, Andrew MacDonald.
  • Goaltender: Anthony Stolarz.

Exposure Requirements:

  • Forward Exposure Requirements: 4/2. Matt Read, Dale Weise, Michael Raffl, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare.
  • D-man Exposure Requirement: 1/1. Brandon Manning.
  • Goalie Exposure Requirement: 1/1. Michal Neuvirth.
  • Other Notable Exposed Exposed: Michael Del Zotto, Scott Laughton, Jordan Weal.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Option: 7 forwards, 3 d-men, 1 goalie

  • Forwards: Sidney Crosby (NMC), Evgeni Malkin (NMC), Phil Kessel (NMC), Patric Hornqvist, Nick Bonino, Bryan Rust, Tom Kuhnhackl.
  • Defensemen: Kris Letang (NMC), Olli Maatta, Justin Schultz.
  • Goaltender: Matt Murray/Marc-Andre Fleury^

Exposure Requirements:

  • Forward Exposure Requirements: 2/2. Carl Hagelin, Scott Wilson.
  • D-man Exposure Requirement: 1/1. Ian Cole.
  • Goalie Exposure Requirement: 1/1. Matt Murray/Marc-Andre Fleury.
  • Other Notable Exposed Exposed: Derrick Pouliot, Brian Dumoulin.

^ Well, the Penguins have a dilemma in the crease. First off, Marc-Andre Fleury (who was their goalie when the Pens won the cup in 2009 and has lead them to the Conference Finals this year so far) has a No Movement Clause. That wouldn’t be a big deal as Fleury is a # 1 goalie. Fortunately or unfortunately for the Pens, they have a goalie who is 10 years younger than Fleury who happened to lead the Penguins all the way to Stanley Cup glory last June in Matt Murray. If it wasn’t for an injury prior to game 1 of the first round, Matt Murray would have been THE guy.

So what do the Penguins do? Well, the Pens can’t just leave a 22 year old goaltender in Matt Murray who arguably should have won the Conn Smythe (playoff MVP) last season exposed. He has to be the guy the Pens protect. So if the Penguins do protect Murray (which I think they will), then the Penguins have two options: i) ask Fleury to waive his NMC or ii) trade him.

After the run and the performance of Marc-Andre Fleury this post-season, I would imagine the Pens have no interest in having Fleury waive his NMC and lose him for nothing. Fleury could definitely retrieve some very good assets in return in a trade. So I would imagine the Pens would trade him rather than lose him for nothing. However, Fleury does have a NMC and Fleury would have to agree to be traded to any team.

Very interesting.

Washington Capitals

Option: 7 forwards, 3 d-men, 1 goalie

  • Forwards: Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Marcus Johansson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Andre Burakovsky, Tom Wilson, Brett Connolly.
  • Defensemen: Matt Niskanen, John Carlson, Dmitry Orlov.
  • Goaltender: Braden Holtby.

Exposure Requirements:

  • Forward Exposure Requirements: 2/2. Lars Eller, Jay Beagle.
  • D-man Exposure Requirement: 2/1. Brooks Orpik, Taylor Chorney.
  • Goalie Exposure Requirement: 1/1. Philipp Grubauer.
  • Other Notable Exposed Exposed: Kevin Shattenkirk, TJ Oshie, Nate Schmidt.

So there you have it…

In my next blog, I unveil my roster for the NHL’s newest franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights.
