Expansion Draft: The Vegas Golden Knights

I finally get to unveil my mock roster for the NHL’s newest franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights. The actual Golden Knights roster will be revealed on June 21 after making their selections on June 20. The 30 existing franchises must submit their protection lists on June 17.

My Central Division protection lists: https://avalancheavenue.wordpress.com/2017/05/08/expansion-draft-central-division/

My Pacific Division protection lists: https://avalancheavenue.wordpress.com/2017/05/11/expansion-draft-pacific-division/

My Atlantic Division protection lists: https://avalancheavenue.wordpress.com/2017/05/14/expansion-draft-atlantic-division/

My Metropolitan Division protection lists: https://avalancheavenue.wordpress.com/2017/05/16/expansion-draft-metropolitan-division/

Just as the existing 30 NHL franchises had rules to follow in terms of protecting/exposing players, the Vegas Golden Knights also have some rules to follow in selecting their roster. The following are rules the Golden Knights must follow:

  • The Golden Knights must select 30 players, one from each team.
  • The Golden Knights must select at least 14 forwards, 9 defensemen, and 3 goalies.
  • Of the 30 players selected, at least 20 of them have to be under contract for next season.
  • The Golden Knights can’t buyout any of their selections until next summer.

So there are the rules. Obviously, the Golden Knights cannot go over the salary cap either.

And keep in mind, a NHL roster consists of 23 players. So obviously some of the following picks are for their AHL affiliate – the Chicago Wolves as well.

Without further ado.

^ – under contract for next season.

* – unsigned.

One player selected from each team: Fulfilled.

Minimum of 14 forwards, 9 d-men, 3 goalies selected: Fulfilled.

Of the 30 players selected, minimum of 20 players under contract for next season: Fulfilled. 20 players have contracts for next year, 10 players are unsigned.

Salary Cap: $50.225 million used of a possible $73-76 million.+

+– Couple of notes here. The $50.225 is the total yearly salary cap hitof the players selected in the Expansion who have contracts for next year. I had 10 players selected who would need to be re-signed thus raising that number.

It also does not include the salary of Vadim Shipachyov, the KHL scoring wizard who the Golden Knights signed to a 2 year, $9 million contract ($4.5 million cap hit).

The salary cap for the 2017-18 season, as I write this, has not been set. There’s been whispers of it possibly rising from $73 million (this year’s cap) to $76 million. It’s also possible that it stays the same.
